Why We Pace This Route This Way

Haa receives a fraction of the traffic that reaches Paro, and the road over Chele La keeps it that way. This trip crosses the pass on the second morning and then stays put in a stone farmhouse at Katsho, where the fields are barley rather than rice and the valley floor is quiet enough to hear the river from the bedroom. You see the two seventh-century temples, walk a forest road most visitors drive past, and return to Paro only for the flight home.
