Why We Pace This Route This Way

The government fee is the same whoever you are, so the way to a lower total is the nights and the food, not the guiding. This route keeps a licensed guide and a private vehicle, which the rules require, and puts the savings into simple rooms and street food instead of hotel dining. It sleeps in two family homestays outside the towns, eats at the places the drivers eat at, and holds two evenings for the night market in Thimphu and the river cafes in Punakha.
