Why We Pace This Route This Way

Phobjikha in winter is a valley of frost, wood smoke and black-necked cranes, and the birds arrive in the same weeks that the tourist season empties out. We keep the farmhouse for three nights so you can be at the marsh at first light twice, rather than passing through on the way somewhere else. The house has a deep window seat over the valley and the family keeps the stove going from early morning.
