Why We Pace This Route This Way

Four days is what most people can take away from work, and it is enough for two valleys when the driving stays short. Every transfer here is under two hours, the market, the cafes and the archery ground all sit inside walking distance, and the Taktsang morning is held for the last day so a late flight home still works. Guests sleep in guesthouses rather than lodges, which keeps the price down without moving them out of town.

Who This Journey Fits Best

  1. Day 1Thimphu2,320 m1 hour 15 mins drive

Land in Paro and take the riverside road to Thimphu

Your guide meets you outside arrivals and takes the valley road east, with a stop at the iron chain bridge at Tachog Lhakhang on the way. Check in to a Thimphu guesthouse, walk the kora at the National Memorial Chorten with the evening crowd, then eat at one of the small places near Changlam.

The weekend market is where the city actually meets, with chillies, dried cheese and sacks of red rice laid out on tarpaulins. Spend the morning there and on the craft lanes behind it, take a long lunch at a cafe on the river, then watch a village archery match in the late afternoon from the spectator bank.

Dochula at first light, then back to Paro

Leave before the traffic and reach the 108 chortens on Dochula while the light is still low on the snow peaks, with tea from the stall on the pass. Drop back into Paro for Kyichu Lhakhang and the town, then dinner at a farmhouse table in Lamgong.
